<\/p>\n
One night, I was very sleepy, and stayed awake to do some work on a new website.\u00a0 I received a text on my cell phone, which was right next to me, charging.\u00a0 Oddly, however, it was from myself.\u00a0 It said, \u201cCome outside.\u201d\u00a0 I was puzzled, and went back to my work.\u00a0 Then it happened again\u2026. \u201dCome outside and visit.\u201d\u00a0 It was quite bizarre, almost\u2026creepy.\u00a0 But I went outside. My spine was tingling, and while I felt kind of apprehensive, I was more intrigued than fearful.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The night was clear and cool \u2013 the kind of cool, windy night that reminded me of a summer\u2019s eve in Nantucket or Naushon, with a lee wind and the moon calling you to go for a sail in a little 12-foot Hereschoff (something I\u2019d done dozens of times, alone or with a friend, or a dog).\u00a0 I walked to the stone table, and sat down on a lawn-chair.\u00a0 Chico walked up; he\u2019d been standing at the fence, gazing at the top of the neighbor\u2019s mango tree\u2026for some reason I just couldn\u2019t divine.\u00a0 I looked up at the sky above the mango tree, and there was a red, steadily glistening planet: Mars, so clear and brilliant that I thought I could almost see its two little moons, Demos and Phobos.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Chico sat down nearby, in the perfect, almost military posture he used when he wanted to be professional.\u00a0 My phone bleeped again. A new message.<\/p>\n

\u201cNice night, isn\u2019t it?\u201d said the message.\u00a0 It was from me.\u00a0 I decided to write back.\u00a0 So I wrote \u201cYes, it is. \u00a0Mars is…glorious. \u00a0I can almost imagine its two moons, and the canals on Mars.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey aren\u2019t canals.\u00a0 They\u2019re ancient transport channels for power distribution.\u201d<\/p>\n
I figured I\u2019d continue to play in this sandbox, so I wrote back:\u00a0 \u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been there. Three billion years ago the Astradiol peoples from across the galactic disk moved power-forces from the poles of Mars to cities and towns hundreds of miles away.\u00a0 They used nuclear thermal propulsion systems to react hydrogen and carbon dioxide for methane production, which was used locally for a broad range of power needs: vehicles, cooling, cooking, and lots of other processes.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cOh\u2026.\u201d I wrote.\u00a0 \u201cHow did you know that?\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cI went there on a trip. Like I said, I\u2019ve been there.\u00a0 When the Astradiols were still there.\u00a0 They left Mars two billion years ago.\u00a0 It became fairly inhospitable.\u00a0 But it used to be a beautiful, scenic, verdant planet, filled with plant and animal life.\u00a0 We catalogued almost all of it before it disappeared forever.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cOh\u2026.Hey, who is this?\u00a0 Or am I crazy?\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cNo.\u00a0 You\u2019re not crazy.\u00a0 This is Chico.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I looked down at him.\u00a0 He was still sitting there, as still as stone, with his eyes half-closed.\u00a0 He hadn\u2019t budged a fraction of an inch.\u00a0 His tail was wagging very, very slightly, but noticeably.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou mean, writing to you? Oh, just telekinetically. It\u2019s not that hard once you practice it.\u00a0 All of us Woggs know how to do that\u2026and a lot more.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I looked at him carefully.\u00a0 He stared at me.\u00a0 Then he smiled.\u00a0 (Have you seen a dog smile?\u00a0 He opened his mouth, and stretched back his lips, and his eyes lit up, while he wagged his tail.\u00a0 He smiled as broadly and clearly as any cheerful baby on earth.)<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I dropped the phone.\u00a0 As I looked at him, I said, aloud, slowly, \u201cWhat are Woggs? Do you mean, the other dogs here?\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
My phone bleeped.\u00a0 I picked it up and looked at the message.\u00a0 Chico was still smiling and wagging his tail, ever more broadly and fervently.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not from here.\u00a0 I\u2019m from a solar system halfway across the galactic disk, on the far western arm of the Milky Way Galaxy, as you call it.\u00a0 Where I\u2019m from, we run the planet\u2026.for the most part, although we don\u2019t do much but collect information and beam it up.\u00a0 We don\u2019t build, we don\u2019t destroy, we don\u2019t fight, we\u2019re vegetarians.\u00a0 All we do is explore. And record.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I dropped the phone again.\u00a0 \u201cI must be having hallucinations,\u201d I thought.\u00a0 \u201cBut I didn\u2019t take any drugs\u2026.never do\u2026.Good Heavens.\u00a0 A Talking Dog. Well…. a texting dog, at least.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Chico smiled again, and even more broadly.\u00a0 He jumped up, and put his paws on my legs, and licked my face.\u00a0 My phone bleeped again\u2026another message.\u00a0 I picked it up.\u00a0 Amazingly, the screen wasn\u2019t cracked.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cI love you\u201d it said.\u00a0 \u201cI love you and I trust you.\u00a0 You can\u2019t tell anyone, ever, ever about this, or they\u2019ll lock us up\u2026both of us\u2026and study us until we die or escape.\u00a0 I can escape\u2026very easily \u2026 but I don\u2019t think you can until I teach you how to teleport.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
For a third time I dropped the phone.\u00a0 I hugged him and said, \u201cOh Chico.\u00a0 This is too much to grasp.\u00a0 It\u2019s really hard to believe.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
He licked me again.\u00a0 I kissed him and my eyes filled with tears.\u00a0 My phone bleeped again.\u00a0 I glanced at it, blinking through the tears.\u00a0 The phone was lying on the ground.\u00a0 The message said, simply, \u201cBelieve it.\u201d\u00a0 Now, I did.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
