One early morning a few months ago \u2013 just as the sun was about to start its transit, and the crickets hadn\u2019t yet figured out it was day\u2019s nubile stirrings \u2013 Chico woke me up, licking my face.\u00a0 I turned my head and looked at the clock\u2026.5:00 AM, good Heavens\u2026and as he couldn\u2019t readily reach my face, he licked my ear.\u00a0 Left ear.\u00a0 \u201cChico, what\u2019s up with this?\u201d I murmured.\u00a0 \u201cCome on,\u201d he said telepathically.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s time for your second teleportation lesson.\u00a0 We have to get a start on what\u2019ll be a rather hot and humid day.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cOK,\u201d I warbled. \u201cLemme throw on some clothes and brush my teeth.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ll wake up Licker,\u201d he chortled.<\/p>\n
Chico loves waking up Licker, although Licker doesn’t always share his enthusiasm for it.\u00a0 Often, Licky will look up, mournfully, and intone, in Lickerish, \u201cHey, Big Dogs need more sleep.\u201d\u00a0 This time, it didn\u2019t work, but oddly, wasn\u2019t even necessary.\u00a0 I heard the bed creak as Licker moved to the end, jumped down, and strode to the black front door with Chico by his side.\u00a0 They waited patiently while I came out of the bathroom, pulled their leashes and collars (always attached) from the waiting hook, and slipped the Martingales over their heads.\u00a0 Licky\u2019s was purple, with a military-colored leash; Chico\u2019s black, with a purple leash (I\u2019d borrowed Chico\u2019s leash from Licky\u2019s two-part fixture at some point, and it works well for both of them).<\/p>\n
